FA Cup: Records and results
Antony Melvin

"The big 6 [Arsenal, Manchester United, Spurs, Everton, Chelsea and Liverpool] have had one or two representatives in the final in an unbroken run stretching back to 1976."

2004/5 is the 124th time that the FA Cup has been contested. In the 133 year history (1872 -) of the FA Cup only the two World Wars have been sufficient excuse not to hold the competition and there were no official winners between 1916 and 1919 or 1940 and 1945.

Manchester United are the current holders and have won the competition the most times (11). Five of Manchester United's wins in the competition have come under the reign of the current manager Sir Alex Ferguson - which is also a record.

Tottenham Hotspur
are the luckiest FA Cup finalists with the defeat to Coventry City in 1987 the only defeat in 9 FA Cup final appearances. Leicester City are easily the most unlucky FA Cup team - four appearances in the final have all ended in defeat. All four defeats took place in a twenty year period between 1949 and 1969 suggesting that there will probably be some fans who attended all four defeats.

In it's long history the FA Cup has been won by 42 clubs, but recent years have seen the FA Cup being dominated by a handful of clubs. In the last 24 years the cup has been won by just eight clubs - six of them winning the tournament 22 times between them. On top of that 10 of the runners-up in this period have also come from this 'big 6'. The big 6 have had one or two representatives in the final in an unbroken run stretching back to 1976.

1981-2004 FA Cup Success
Manchester United (7 wins, 1 runner-up)
Arsenal (4, 1)
Liverpool (4, 1)
Tottenham Hotspur (3, 1)
Everton (2, 3)
Chelsea (2, 2)

All others (2 wins - Coventry City and Wimbledon - and 15 runners-up)

Since 1989 this dominance has narrowed and every single FA Cup winner of the last 16 years has been drawn from this pool of six clubs as well as a larger proportion of the runners-up.

1989-2004 FA Cup Success
Manchester United (5 wins, 1 runner-up)
Arsenal (4, 1)
Liverpool (3, 1)
Chelsea (2, 2)
Everton (1, 1)
Tottenham Hotspur (1, 0)

All others (0 wins, 10 runners-up)
